Summer’s winding down but there’s still plenty of time to squeeze in a few of these fun summer activities… Which ones are still on your list for Summer 2016?
1. Take a Hike
Late summer is the perfect time to hit the trails - the worst of the biting bugs are over and the weather is still beautiful. Short of taking a vacation, a hike is one of the best ways to unwind and unplug from your day-to-day routine. For the full effect, keep your phone firmly zipped into your backback - at least until it’s time to capture a victorious top-of-the-mountain shot! Don’t forget snacks, sunscreen and plenty of water... cool August mornings can quickly turn into hot afternoons!
2. Go to A Farmer’s Market
If you’ve been meaning to make it to the farmer’s market all summer, you’re in luck: harvest season is here and with it the best selection of local fruits and vegetables you’ll find all year. Treat yourself to a large bunch of sunflowers or gladiolas to brighten your home. Stock up on blueberries or peaches to make a batch of your favorite jam, or grab some freshly-picked corn for an impromptu corn roast. You’ll find plenty of gourmet options at most farmer’s markets these days: from grilled vegetable salads to freshly baked bread you have the makings of a delicious picnic… which brings us to our next topic!
3. Pack a Picnic
What is it about eating outdoors that makes food taste so good? A picnic for two or with a group of family and friends is the perfect way to enjoy a lazy Sunday afternoon. And whether you’re in the mood for an elaborate BBQ cookout or some simple market treats, spending time outdoors in good company will make it feel like a summer day well spent.
4. Get Your Hands Dirty
If you missed the boat on spring planting this year (or maybe simply forgot to water those planters!) it’s not too late to add some late season colour to your garden. Fall classics like asters and chrysanthemums will be hitting the garden centres soon, the perfect pick-me-up for perennial borders or the front porch. Of course serious gardeners are already planning ahead… Plant your spring bulbs as early as September and they will have a chance to put down roots before the frost for earlier blooms next year.
5. Go for a Dip
Nothing says summer like a day at the beach, and an entire week - whether in the Maritimes, Maine or Cape Cod - is even better! Can’t get away for more than the day? Grab your shades, a good beach read, and your Zaza flip flops - the nearest swimming pool or lake will do the trick. Sip a glass of ice cold lemonade and stretch out and watch the clouds go by. Sure it’s sizzling hot now, but let’s enjoy it while it lasts, summer will be over before we know it!
